An institution born of a 1947 college and a 2023 charter

Vikram Dev University, Jeypore, is a State public affiliating university in southern Odisha. Its lineage runs back to Jeypore College, founded by Maharaja Sri Vikram Deo Verma on 1 July 1947. The college became autonomous in 1990 and was upgraded to university status by the Government of Odisha on 2 February 2023. Operations as a university began on 1 June 2023.

Statutory framework

Vikram Dev University is established under the Odisha Universities Act, as amended, and is recognised by the University Grants Commission. The University is empowered to grant degrees within the meaning of Section 22 of the UGC Act, 1956, and is eligible for grants under Section 12B once it completes the first cycle of NAAC accreditation.

Establishment Act: Odisha Universities Act, 1989, as amended; constitution as a State public university notified on 2 February 2023.
Operational date: 1 June 2023: affiliation authority transferred from Berhampur University with effect from this date for the four jurisdictional districts.
Recognition: Recognised by the University Grants Commission. UGC 2(f) status confirmed; Section 12B inclusion conditional on first NAAC accreditation cycle.
